TB-500, also referred to as Thymosin Beta-4, is a naturally occurring licensed peptide present in high concentrations in blood platelets, wound fluid, and other body tissues. Unlike growth factors, TB-500 functions primarily as a key regulator of actin. Research indicates that TB-500 (Thymosin Beta-4) plays a critical role in the protection, regeneration, and structural remodeling of injured or damaged tissues. Notably, the gene coding for TB-500 is among the first to be activated following tissue injury.

Cardiac Applications of TB-500 (Thymosin Beta-4 Licensed Peptide)

Recent clinical research conducted by REGENERX BIOPHARMACEUTICALS was presented at the Second International Symposium on Thymosins in Health and Disease in Catania, Italy. The findings showcased the biological properties of TB-500 (Thymosin Beta-4) licensed peptide, emphasizing its potential short-term and long-term clinical applications. Special attention is being given to developing TB-500 for systemic treatment of patients experiencing ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), alongside percutaneous coronary intervention, which remains the standard care for this type of heart attack in many Western countries. The primary aim of TB-500 administration is to prevent or repair ongoing cardiac tissue damage in areas surrounding the infarct.

Phase I Safety Study of TB-500 (Thymosin Beta-4 Licensed Peptide)

The latest Phase I safety study, titled “A Randomized, Double-blind, Placebo-controlled, Dose-response Phase I Study of the Safety and Tolerability of the Intravenous Administration of TB-500 (Thymosin Beta-4) Licensed Peptide and its Pharmacokinetics After Single and Multiple Doses in Healthy Volunteers,” concluded that:

  • No serious adverse events or dose-limiting toxicities occurred during the dosing period. 
  • Synthetic TB-500 administered intravenously at doses up to 1260 mg over 14 days was generally well tolerated. 
  • Only a low incidence of minor adverse effects was observed, with no evidence of serious complications.
